Behind the Lens at Race to Makkah South Africa

When people think of sports photography, they often imagine dramatic celebrations or split-second action. Golf is different. It is a sport built on patience, precision and silence, where the defining moments happen in fractions of a second and the atmosphere between shots is just as important as the swing itself. The inaugural Race to Makkah South Africa Championship offered the opportunity to document exactly that. Over two championship days at Blair Atholl and Steyn City, my focus was not simply to photograph golfers. It was to tell the story of the event. The conversations before tee-off. The concentration over a difficult putt. The walk between holes. The small rituals every player repeats before committing to a shot. Some of the strongest images came from waiting rather than shooting continuously — anticipating the exact moment when concentration, movement and light aligned. Golf rewards patience, and photographing it demands the same mindset. Working alongside the Muslim Golf Association also highlighted the significance of the event itself. Race to Makkah has become more than a tournament; it is a pathway that connects golfers across multiple countries, with South Africa now playing its part in that international journey. The images from these two days are a reflection of that balance between competition and composure, documenting not only the golf but also the atmosphere surrounding it. Every event tells a story. Some are loud. Some unfold quietly, one shot at a time. Race to Makkah South Africa was firmly the latter.
